About this coffee :

Named after a tribe of the Oromia people, Guji is one of the zones of the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Guji is surrounded by Borena in the south, by the Southern Nations Nationalities, and Peoples Region in the west, in the north by the Ganale Dorya River which separates it from Bale and in the east by the Somalia region. The highest peak in this zone is Mount Dara Tiniro. Major cities and towns in this zone include Nagele Borana the administrative centre.

Agricultural researchers across the world have always been working to maximise production yield while battling harmful factors like plant diseases, pest infestation (mainly coffee borer beetles), ease of sowing and harvesting, and climate adaptation.

In the 1970s, Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC) managed to develop two single varietals 74110 and 74112 to combat coffee berry disease in Ethiopia, and released them in 1979 once they were ready; these two varietals originated from a single “Mother Tree” in the Bishari village, Metu Province, Illubabor Zone.

Nevertheless, the general Ethiopian farmers still primarily cultivate “heirloom” coffees passed down from generation to generation, because it is easier and cheaper. It was not until the recent specialty coffee movement that more and more producers started paying extra attention to details – in this case, the controlled cultivation of delicious varietals.

You can expect an intense fruity note of tropical fruit, strawberry, grape, with an excellent orange blossom floral and clean finish. Expect a clean but distinct profile from this exceptional coffee with a distinct cantaloupe-like sweetness.
