About This Coffee
Gahahe is a washing station in the Kayanza region of Burundi. It runs 180 drying beds, four cherry sorting tables and ten fermentation tanks, and takes in up to 750 metric tonnes of cherry a year.
This is the eighth consecutive year Nomad has bought coffee from Gahahe.
The station also works with the growers around it. Farmers are organised into cooperatives through a Farmer Hub, supplied with organic fertiliser composted from coffee pulp, and offered low-cost seeds and seedlings by Bugestal, in collaboration with ISABU, Burundi's agricultural research institute.

Our house starting point — these are our own figures, not Nomad's.
Start with a 40g bloom for 40 seconds, then pour in two or three even stages. If the cup tastes sharp or thin, grind a step finer; if it turns drying or hollow, coarsen slightly and shorten the brew.
How Much Coffee Is in a Bag?
A 250g bag gives you about 14 filter cups at the 18g dose in the recipe above, which is roughly two weeks of a daily brew.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better for espresso or filter?
Filter. This is the filter-line lot from Nomad's range, and they describe the cup as ideal for filter, so the floral and tangerine notes come through most clearly in a pour over, batch brew or immersion setup.
What does it taste like?
Floral, tangerine and roasted pineapple, with juicy acidity and balanced sweetness.
How fresh is the coffee?
These beans are roasted by Nomad in Barcelona and imported to Malaysia — they are not roasted in our Kuala Lumpur roastery. We ship on arrival. In our experience the beans are drinking at their best around 2–3 weeks past the roast date.
What does "washed" processing mean?
The fruit is stripped from the coffee cherry and the beans are fermented and rinsed in water before drying, rather than being dried inside the fruit. Removing the fruit early gives you a cleaner, more transparent cup where the acidity and character of the variety and the terroir show through.
