About This Coffee

Aquiares sits on the Turrialba volcano's slopes, and no other coffee plantation in Costa Rica covers a single unbroken block this large — one continuous estate rather than a patchwork of separate plots. Waterways run across the land, linking the two rivers that bound the farm, the Turrialba and the Aquiares.

The farm is owned and run by Diego Robelo and his family. Nomad has bought from Aquiares for nine years running.

This lot is a washed preparation of Marsellesa and Obatá.

How to Brew

Method Espresso
Ratio 1:2
Coffee 18g
Water 36g in the cup
Water Temperature 93°C
Total Brew Time 26–30 seconds

Our house starting point — these are our own figures, not Nomad's.

Start at 18g in, 36g out, in about 28 seconds, then adjust from there. If the shot tastes sharp or thin, grind finer or push the temperature up a degree; if it turns dry and bitter, coarsen the grind or shorten the shot.

How Much Coffee Is in a Bag?

A 250g bag gives you roughly 14 double espressos at 18g a shot. If you brew it as filter at 15g a cup, it is closer to 16 cups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this better for espresso or filter?
This is the espresso-line lot from Nomad. It will still brew as filter if that is the kit you have.

What does it taste like?
Milk chocolate and caramel, dates through the middle, orange and a long cherry aftertaste. Nomad calls it sweet, balanced and smooth.

How fresh is the coffee?
Nomad roast in Barcelona and we ship on arrival, so these are not KL-roasted beans. In our experience the beans are drinking at their best around 2–3 weeks past the roast date.

What does washed processing mean?
The fruit is stripped off the bean before drying, so the coffee dries as clean parchment instead of inside its own pulp. You lose the heavy fermented fruitiness of a natural and gain clarity, a cleaner sweetness and a more predictable cup.
